Frequently Asked Questions
About the Retreat
Who is this retreat for?
This retreat is designed for knitters who enjoy a calm pace, beautiful surroundings, good food and meaningful shared experiences. You don’t need to be an advanced knitter — curiosity, openness and a love for knitting are what matter most.
How many participants will there be?
We aim for a small, intimate group of approximately 10 participants. This allows for a relaxed rhythm, personal interaction and a sense of ease throughout the retreat.
What language is the retreat conducted in?
The official language of the retreat is English. All activities, communication and shared moments will be in English.
Is this a workshop or a learning-focused retreat?
This is not an intensive technique-based workshop. While we’ll spend time knitting together and enjoying conversations with knitwear designers, the focus is on inspiration, presence and shared experience rather than formal instruction.
Accommodation & Daily Life
Where will we stay?
We’ll stay at Runo Hotel, a boutique hotel in the heart of Porvoo, just steps away from the Old Town and the river. The hotel was awarded a Michelin Key in 2025.
Will I have free time?
Yes. While the programme is thoughtfully curated, the pace is intentionally unhurried. There is time built in for rest, quiet knitting, walks and simply enjoying where you are.
What is the Knitting Lounge?
The Knitting Lounge is our shared, cosy space where we gather to knit, talk, rest and spend time together during the retreat. It’s a place to return to throughout the days, not a formal classroom.
Walking, Weather & What to Wear
How much walking is involved?
Porvoo is best experienced on foot. During the retreat, we’ll walk through cobblestone streets, between nearby locations in town, and during our archipelago excursion.
Participants should be comfortable walking approximately 3–5 km (2–3 miles) at a relaxed pace on some days. The terrain may include cobblestones, natural paths and gentle hills.
Do I need special fitness?
No special fitness level is required, but a basic level of mobility and comfort walking outdoors is important to fully enjoy the experience.
What will the weather be like in June?
June is early summer in Finland. Days are long and bright, with temperatures typically ranging from 15–22°C (60–72°F). Evenings can be cooler, especially by the sea.
What should I pack?
We recommend:
- Comfortable walking shoes (good grip for cobblestones)
- Layered clothing (light sweaters, a jacket)
- A light scarf or shawl
- Weather-appropriate outerwear for the archipelago day
- Your knitting projects and preferred tools
- A more detailed packing list will be sent closer to the retreat.
Food, Drinks & Dining Culture
Are meals included?
Yes. The retreat includes daily breakfast, most lunches and dinners at carefully selected restaurants. Details are listed on the retreat page.
Are drinks included with meals?
Beverages are not included with restaurant meals and are paid individually.
How are dietary requirements handled?
Dietary requirements and allergies will be collected in advance. Finnish restaurants are generally very experienced with special diets, and we’ll do our best to accommodate everyone.
Is tipping expected in Finland?
Tipping is not expected in Finland. Service is included in restaurant prices. If you receive exceptional service and wish to tip, rounding up or leaving a small amount is appreciated but never required.
Travel & Getting Around
How do I get to Porvoo?
Group transfers are arranged from Helsinki Airport at scheduled times on arrival and departure days. Exact details are provided on the retreat page.
If you prefer to arrange your own transportation, that’s absolutely fine — we simply ask that you let us know in advance.
Do I need a car?
No. Everything during the retreat is planned so that you don’t need a car. Porvoo is compact and walkable, and group transport is arranged for excursions.
Knitting, Materials & Shopping
Is yarn included?
Yarn is not included unless otherwise stated. You’re welcome to bring your own projects or purchase yarn during shop visits and at Garnfest Porvoo.
Can I shop during the retreat?
Yes. There will be opportunities to visit local yarn shops in Porvoo and Helsinki, as well as Garnfest Porvoo, a small and carefully curated yarn festival.
